Fifth-grade students in Ms. Colston's reading class are learning the difference between fact and opinion in a complex text. Students turned to the anchor chart in their binders to review clue words. Graphic organizers were completed to reinforce the skill. Small groups were pulled to make sure students comprehended the complex text and used sticky notes to jot down important notes.  #TransformersStrongerTogether

Third-grade Spencer-Westlawn Scholars have completed their first Project-Based Learning (PBL) of the year with Mrs. Knowles! Third-graders became experts on the Hazardous Storm, Hurricane Katrina. After identifying the root of the problem related to Hurricane Katrina, they were tasked to build a levee to withstand water. Students were given a budget and a list of materials they could buy. They had to decide on the materials to purchase collectively. Lastly, they built their levees and tested them against water. #TransformersStrongerTogether

Ms. Colston's fifth-graders prepare for their major assessment through numerous explicit vocabulary lessons and open-ended question practice. Students use a vocabulary card pop game to determine which word fits best in the sentence. Ms. Colston later gives timed practice questions in a Schoology assignment for students to type their responses. This prep will surely lead to reading success! #TransformersStrongerTogether
